Stand Out!
From very early on as kids, we learned that being like your peers was a safe and easier way to fit in with other kids. As most of us wouldn’t dare to try and be different during this time in our life for we knew the wrath of criticism and reticule that would follow. As we entered in to high school, the peer groups broke up into more specific types of groups. Although various peer groups in themselves would be different, there was strength in numbers to combat the criticism and reticule from the other groups of kids. As we entered into college, it became a lot easier to be different than our peers. Your maturity level during college helped to better navigate any fall out from being different. Also, it was a great time in our lives when everyone was trying to find them selves and being different was the norm! As adults, we find that being different is a lot easier than in our youth. We understand that being different or standing out doesn’t always have to be with such fan fare. Standing out can take many forms. It can be as simple as changing your hairstyle and/or clothing style, getting a tattoo or making a donation to charity. Standing out can also be something news worthy such as a scientific discovery or a successful business venture. The key to standing out is doing something that you find personally satisfying or something that benefits a great number of people. Sheryl Sandberg clearly advocates, “To stand out, lean in and be willing to stand up for something that is really important to you and to others.” So go on and stand out!
